You probably heard the word “Authentic” thousands of times over and not given any thought to what this actually means or are you actually bothered about the authenticity of anything. Well since 2016 Authentic Food and Meal experiences taken the centre stage in culinary travel. Whether you are a seasoned traveller and always go with local’s recommendations for food or stick to touristy places, this “Authentic” trend in food or culinary travel is hard to ignore. If you have travelled for a while or lived in a foreign country, you probably came across some very local experiences and maybe even very familiar with certain places for the best food and experience. Whether you prefer the local and authentic or mainstream chains is a different matter altogether. In this article, we would like to focus on ways you can make the best out of Authentic Meal Experience while travelling or living in a new country.

Eat What Locals Eat

If you happen to know some locals where you now reside or going on a visit, it is a good idea to ask your local friends about their food choices and what they would consider a traditional dish. This might have changed over the years, but typically anyone can come up with few names of the dishes they grew up with or their gran used to make on occasion. Most of us have several dishes that we love making especially when hosting visiting friends. Whether it is the famous Irish Breakfast in Ireland or Sunday Roast in England, there must be few that they still cook and enjoy even though the world has been taken over by avocados (smashed avocado on toast must be a speciality somewhere, but that is another article). So make a note of those dishes and make a mental note to try them out!

Eat Where Locals Eat

It is not always obvious to see where locals go to eat and for some of us how do we even know what locals look like? Sometimes there are obvious signs and sometimes there aren’t. So without any guesses the best place to get advice is probably to ask people where you are staying or turn to foodie groups online, travel forums or blogs. This, of course, would be a very time-consuming way to look for a place to eat especially if you are very hungry! So if you know you are travelling or relocating and would like to sample authentic meals, the best thing to do is to research in advance and it always a good idea to pre-book. That way not only you are guaranteed to get a chance to sample authentic cuisines, but also be less disappointed if you do find a good place or a local host serving up a treat that is totally booked up for your dates/times.

Eat When Locals Eat

You might be surprised to hear that what people have in France for breakfast is a snack elsewhere and that smoothies are not something French enjoy in the morning. And while most of us like our coffee in the morning, in other countries it is common enough to have it after an evening meal. So it’s not only what you are going to have but also when you are going to have it matters when you are about to enjoy a truly authentic meal experience.  Often in Mediterranean countries, meals tend to last hours and consist of several courses. If you like to take it slow, why not join a true authentic feast?

Eat With Locals

After all, there is no better way to embrace authentic meal experience but by doing all 3 above and in a company of a local! With passionate cooks around the world serving authentic dishes right now and joined by locals, there is no better time to join in and sample the local specialities the authentic way. If you love fresh food made following traditional recipes then authentic meal experiences are probably going to be your thing no matter where you are or go.
